College Profile

WHERE IS IT?
The Luang Nam Tha Teacher Training School (TTS) is situated in remote Northern Laos, close to the stunning Nam Ha protected area. It is nearby the Golden Triangle region – approximately 58 km from China and 100 km from Myanmar. The TTS is the only teacher training institution in far northern Laos.
WHAT DOES THE AREA LOOK LIKE?
It is a lush, mountainous region known for its cultivation of rice and rubber tree plantations. The region has a wet season in the middle of the year causing the weather to be very humid and hot. From approximately October to March is the dry season, when weather can get very cold and temperatures can sometimes drop as low as 0 degrees.
THE STUDENTS
The Luang Nam Tha Teacher Training College services students from the Luang Nam Tha Province as well as three neighbouring provinces – Oudomxay, Bokeo and Phongsali. A large percentage of students come from minority villages where Lao is only their second language. This can make study at a College level very difficult for many students.
The College has just over 1000 students, with many of them living in on campus accommodation. Between 10 and 15 students live in each room.
THE STUDY PROGRAM
Students are able to graduate as primary or secondary school teachers. There are four different teacher training programs available to students. The first number signifies how many years of school the student has completed and the second number indicates how many years their teacher training course will be. (Eg 8 + 3 course – Students have completed 8 years of schooling and will be required to study for three years at the TTS.)
